tejano music

In this blog post I will be talking about Tejano music. When I think of Mexican music I think of up beat music. This year I really have been into Mexican music. It really is a good type of genre of music where you just hangout with some friends at a party and dance around and just have a good time. This music is also known as Tex-Mex music. This music is a mixture of Mexican music and with U.S influences. The music first started in the mid 19th century. It originally originated in Texas. Even though there is Mexican and Latino kind of style it is mainly American influenced.  When I think of Tejano music I just think that only people from Mexico sing this kind of music and that it is only Spanish music. When I began researching I realized it was more than just Spanish music. It is more than it is a mix of various things like folk , rock, r&B, Country and of course latino music. The Tejano culture is very important for food but also the culture that the Tejano music brings to the table.

A very famous Tejano singer is Selena Quintanilla. Until over the summer i did not even know who she was until I saw the show on netflix about her. I was very fascinated when I started the series and it really helped me understand her as an artist and how touching and amazing Mexican music can actually be. Selena started singing when she was really young and then her career stormed off from there. As I stated before Tejano originated in Texas. That is where Selena is from. Not only was she known for her singing but also the “sexy” outfits she used to wear when she would perform. In my opinion when I listen to her voice it sounds so beautiful and so soulful. There are so many genres in Tejano music that you can incorporate your music with. Selena was a Tejano artist that was on the pop and the r&b side. I do not know what the words are that she was singing but it feels like she puts her heart into her music and it has love in singing and that reflects in the Tejano culture.

One of the most original Tejano instruments is the conjunto. This word means group or assemble in mexican. There are several things that make up a conjunto.  The accordion originated from german and started off to be a german instrument first but then got brought down to mexico where it became a mexican instrument to be expressed by the mexican culture and to be used throughout Tejano music. The instruments that make it up are the accordion, bajo sexto, electric bass and drums. The way all of those instruments make up that is beautiful when all of it comes together. When i think of tejano music i also think of mariachi music and it is a very good example of tejano music because it is a conjunto and it has the accordion that they play while they preform and they also have trumpets which are also music that they use with there culture of music. In a mariachi band they incorporate all of the different types of instruments to create such a beautiful sound.

Another famous Tejano singer was Ruben Ramous . He was also born in Texas where he got his culture of making the Tejano music. Ruben started making his career back in the 60’s. This is where his career took off in the making. While making his music the thing that stood out the most was Rubens own distinct sound of Tejano music. When I listen to his music it is very up beat and makes me want to dance. This is pure Mexican music because it is happy, joyful and passionate and his music is what represents that.

Overall i love mexican music and Tejano music i hoped yall liked what i have learned about the Tejano genre and all that goes with it. I love how this type of music brings people together in such a positive way and how its so peaceful to listen to.

  1. Hey EC, I’m sooooo glad you found out about Selena. And yes, I agree I did think of Mexican or Hispanic music as being upbeat but Selena definitely had a beautiful balance between upbeat and slow.

  3. Hey! Thank you so much for sharing this type of music with us! It is just so interesting! I also feel that this music is more upbeat and loud compared to a calming music that you may use when you are studying. Although, I'm glad that you talked about Selena because I feel as though she had a good blend!

  4. It was very interesting to see the blend of style that Selena brought to this genre of music. The music is very upbeat, which is such a stark comparison to the class where the music would never reach this level of dynamic.
